How to support a volunteer fire department

Volunteer departments often rely on a mix of public funding, grants, fundraising and community support. The most useful help starts by asking what the department can accept and what it currently needs.

Ask before buying gear

Protective equipment and tools can have standards, compatibility and procurement requirements. A cash contribution to an approved fund may be more useful than an unsolicited equipment purchase.

Look for grant programs

Some charities provide equipment grants. FFCF states that its fire-department program can support firefighting equipment, tools, clothing and other necessary items.

Help with community fundraising

Local events can raise money and strengthen awareness. Keep financial handling transparent and coordinate directly with the department or its authorized nonprofit.

National support options

If local giving is not practical, research organizations that explicitly fund volunteer departments and compare their current public filings.
